In an interesting development, math teachers can be given competency exams when their students perform poorly on the MCAS exam. The idea appears to put pressure on math teachers to prepare students for the MCAS exams. Most teachers would pass, but the teachers don’t want to take the exam as a matter of principle, since they don’t think students poor scores is necessarily their fault. This decision was upheld by the state’s highest court on May 9th.
