The American Psychological Society released a research report indicating that elementary-school teachers who make phonics the major component to reading education are using the best approach to make students become skilled and independent readers. The report does not dismiss whole-language instruction – it says that whole-language instruction should be used together with phonics in order to make the learning experience more meaningful. An article describing the findings is given on www.psychologicalscience.org
