In a new Colorado statewide survey of 1,000 kindergarten and first-grade teachers, the teachers believe that 40 percent of children are not academically prepared to enter the classroom. Specifically, the study finds that the students entering school cannot recognize their printed name, count to 20, or tell the difference between letters and numbers. The state believes children who entered school with deficient skills are more prone to stay behind. The state wants to fix the problem by giving them a good start.
